Slow internet is one of the most common and most frustrating issues we are called about. The good news is that the cause is usually identifiable, and often fixable without replacing the connection. Here is the methodical approach we use - and that you can follow too.

Step 1: Test the connection properly

Run a speed test from a computer plugged into the router with a cable, not over Wi-Fi. This tells you what your actual line is delivering, separate from any Wi-Fi issues. Note both the download and upload figures, then compare them to what you are paying for.

If the wired speed is close to your package but it still feels slow, the problem is likely Wi-Fi or upload-related (see below). If the wired speed is far below your package, the line or provider is the issue.

Step 2: Rule out Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi is the single most common cause of "slow internet" complaints. Watch for:

  • Distance and walls between devices and the access point
  • Too many devices on a consumer-grade router
  • Interference from neighbouring networks
  • Old hardware that can't keep up with modern speeds

Business-grade access points, properly positioned, solve most Wi-Fi problems.

Step 3: Check your upload

A starved upload makes everything feel slow even when downloads are fine - calls break up, backups stall, and sharing files chokes the connection. If your upload is low, you may have an asymmetric connection that no longer fits how your business works.

Step 4: Look at contention and time of day

If speeds are fine in the morning but crawl in the afternoon, you may be feeling contention - too many users sharing capacity at peak times. This is a sign you may have outgrown shared business broadband and could benefit from a dedicated leased line.

Step 5: Inspect the hardware

Reboot the router. Check cables for damage. Confirm the router firmware is current. Ageing or overloaded routers are a frequent and easily-missed cause.

When to call for help

If you have worked through these steps and the problem persists - or if downtime is hurting the business - it is time to bring in a professional. Persistent issues sometimes point to a faulty line that needs the provider to investigate, which is far easier with a strong SLA behind you.

We'll find the bottleneck

Our Connectivity service can diagnose slow connections, fix the Wi-Fi, and recommend the right upgrade if the line itself is the problem. Request a callback and let's get you back up to speed.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my business internet so slow?

Common causes are Wi-Fi problems, a weak upload, peak-time contention on a shared line, or ageing hardware. Testing on a wired connection helps pinpoint the cause.

How can I test my real internet speed?

Run a speed test from a computer plugged in by cable, not over Wi-Fi, and compare both download and upload against what you are paying for.

When should I upgrade rather than troubleshoot?

If wired speeds are far below your package, or speeds collapse at busy times, you may have outgrown a shared connection and should consider full fibre or a leased line.
