Apple announced the Duo on 9 September 2026 as the "one more thing" after the iPhone 18 Pro. Closed, it is a slightly squat phone with a 5.4-inch screen that Apple says gives about 90% of the screen area of an iPhone 18 Pro. Open, the 7.6-inch inner display is roughly 50% larger than a Pro Max screen, with a nano-texture finish to cut glare, and both displays share the same aspect ratio so an app scales rather than reflows when you open the phone.

The specification is Pro-grade: the A20 Pro chip with a vapour chamber, a dual-battery design, a 48MP main camera and Apple's C2 modem. Apple has promised Apple Pencil support with USB-C via a software update later in 2026, which turns the inner screen into a genuine note-taking and mark-up surface. iOS 27 has been adapted to the two-screen layout, with apps continuing from outer to inner screen when you open the phone and Split View working on the inner display.

Two things are unusual for an iPhone. There is no Face ID: the thin body could not accommodate it, so the Duo uses Touch ID built into the side button, as recent iPads do. And it is eSIM-only worldwide, with no physical SIM tray in any market, including the UK.

Why a business might want one

• Directors and consultants who read on the move. Board packs, contracts, long email threads and PDFs are miserable on a 6.3-inch phone and fine on a 7.6-inch one. If someone currently carries an iPad mini for exactly this, the Duo replaces it.
• Anyone who looks at plans, drawings or dashboards in the field. Site managers, surveyors, facilities staff and engineers who need to see a floor plan or a Power BI dashboard without zooming and panning.
• Sales staff who present from the phone. A 7.6-inch screen across a café table is a presentation; a 6.3-inch one is not.

The practical catches for a fleet

eSIM-only. Every UK business network supports eSIM, and for most companies this is a benefit: you can provision a number to a phone remotely, move it to a replacement in minutes, and run a personal and a work line on one device without a second SIM. The catches are operational. If your network still issues physical business SIMs by default, ask for eSIM activation before the phones arrive. If you have staff who travel and rely on cheap local physical SIMs, they will need eSIM travel plans instead. Touch ID rather than Face ID. For users this is a small adjustment. For IT it changes nothing about enrolment or security policy: Touch ID satisfies the same biometric requirements in MDM and the same app-level authentication as Face ID. Gloves are the one case where it is worse; a Face ID phone unlocks on a cold site and a Touch ID phone does not.

Durability and insurance. For a business already standardised on iPhone, the Duo is the obvious choice because it slots into the same management, the same apps and the same support. What it costs the business

At £1,999 outright, or £66.63 a month over 30 months on Apple's 0% finance, the Duo costs about the same as an iPhone 18 Pro plus an iPad mini. That is the fair comparison: if it replaces both, the sums work; if it replaces only the phone, you have spent £800 on a bigger screen.

The UK networks (EE, O2, Vodafone and Sky Mobile have all confirmed they will range it) will sell it on business contracts with the handset spread over 24 or 36 months. Expect handset elements north of £55 a month before airtime and upfront payments, and expect trade-in offers at launch. The iPhone Duo is the best-built foldable yet and the first one that fits neatly into an all-Apple business. Buy it for the handful of people who will actually open it fifty times a day - the director with the board pack, the surveyor with the plans, the salesperson presenting from a café table - and it will replace a second device and pay for itself in convenience. Do not put it on the standard handset list. Wait for the second generation before considering it for anyone whose phone lives in a pocket on a building site, and insure every one you buy.
