What are 084 & 087 service numbers (0843, 0844, 0845, 0870, 0871)?

084 and 087 numbers are service numbers. Since 2015 the cost is split into an access charge set by your phone provider and a service charge set by the organisation you're calling, which must be advertised wherever the number appears.

These numbers are used by some businesses for sales, booking and support lines. Many organisations have moved away from them towards caller-friendly 03 numbers following criticism of the cost.

The service charge can be up to 7p per minute for 0843/0844, up to 13p per minute for 0871/0872/0873, and 0845/0870 are typically charged at similar rates. On top of that your provider adds its access charge (often 40-60p+ per minute). Calls are usually not included in inclusive minutes.
